In my work with clients and students, I often get asked the same question: “Should I be taking supplements?” My answer is always the same—it depends. Supplements can be powerful tools for restoring balance, supporting wellness, or bridging nutritional gaps. But they’re not magic pills. They only work when used wisely, intentionally, and with a food-first mindset.

If you’re considering adding supplements to your daily routine, here are 7 practical strategies I share in my practice to help you do it safely and effectively.

1. Know Why You're Taking It

Before reaching for that bottle of vitamins or herbs, it’s important to pause and ask: Why am I taking this? In my practice, I often remind clients that supplements should never be a matter of chance. Whether it’s magnesium to ease muscle tension, B12 for energy, or omega-3s for inflammation, understanding your specific reason helps guide not only what you take but also how much and for how long. Supplements are powerful tools, not one-size-fits-all solutions. When we pair the reason with your unique health story, we turn guesswork into targeted support; that’s where real healing begins. Start with purpose. Are you addressing a diagnosed deficiency? Supporting immune function? Managing stress? A clear “why” helps you choose the right supplement and avoid wasting money or doing harm.
